RILC Client Granted Asylum

We are thrilled for our client Mohammad A., who was granted asylum in Immigration Court today. Congratulations, Mohammad!

Mohammad was born in Egypt into a loving Palestinian family. As a Palestinian in Egypt, he was stateless; he did not have Egyptian citizenship. As an adult, he was severely persecuted by the government for his political beliefs. After fleeing Egypt, Mohammad endured a difficult years-long journey through many countries who turned him away. He ended up in Hawaii and in removal proceedings a couple of years ago.

We are so grateful to and proud of Greg Kim for volunteering to take Mohammad’s case pro bono (his first immigration case!). Thank you for your extraordinary dedication to helping Mohammad for the past two years!

Mahalo nui also to Kenneth Tea ’23, who worked on Mohammad’s case as a RILC clinical student. Even though Kenneth graduated a year ago, he appeared via WebEx at Mohammad’s hearings in July and today. Without Kenneth’s support and friendship, Mohammad would not be where he is today.

We’d also like to thank Samantha Sitterley with United Stateless for her invaluable guidance in litigating on behalf of a stateless client.

Mohammad, we’re so happy to welcome you as an asylee (and future citizen) to the United States. E komo mai!
