Kona Client Receives Asylum!

Congratulations to one of our young clients in Kona on recently receiving asylum!

Thanks to the excellent lawyering of Deb Cho ’22 while she was a RILC student, the Immigration Court granted our client’s mother asylum. Back in their home country, a powerful gang leader had murdered the grandmother in their family as a warning to the family to obey his commands. The family fled their country to seek asylum.

After a temporary separation from her mother, our client was reunited with her mother in Hawai’i. RILC filed a follow-to-join petition for the child and obtained asylum status for her as well.

We are thrilled for our client and her family. We would also like to thank Nicole Woo and Davy Lee for faithfully arranging flights between Kona and Honolulu, and providing transportation to and from the airport, for this client and her mother and so many of our Kona-based clients. Their volunteer work enabled this client to make it to her biometrics appointment and interview without any problems and contributed to its successful outcome. Mahalo nui loa!
